In 2008, Alabama commissioners tried to racially gerrymander Shelby County, AL to make the only black man on the city council, Ernest Montgomery, lose. The percent of African Americans in his precint went from 69% to 29%. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund took the county court and forced another election. Racial gerrymandering is just one of the ways racist legislators suppress the votes of black and colored Americans and this organization has been around for 75 years trying to fight such social inequalities.
The National Black Justice Coalition seeks to empower black members of the LGBTQ+ community. They are America's leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights organization focused on federal public policy.

The NAACP has been around for over 100 years and has been paramount to several landmark social justice cases. The NAACP fought in Brown v. Board to help end segregation in schooling in the 1950's. Their perseverance led way to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
EJI provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes, poor prisoners, and other people who may have been denied a fair trial. It was founded by Bryan Stevenson who is on the front lines for the fight for equality. We highly recommend his documentary "Bryan Stevenson's Fight for Equality" if you have not seen it!
